About Our Scout Campsite
Glenshelane Scout Campsite is a very unique Scout and Guide Campsite situated in the sunny South East of Ireland near the County Waterford town of Cappoquin. This quiet market town at the head of the Tidal River Blackwater Estuary lies beneath the southern slopes of the Knockmealdown Mountains. The surrounding country is well wooded and very beautiful, especially along the Blackwater valley.
Our Scout Campsite is administered by the 4th Waterford Unit, Abbeyside Scout Group affiliated to Scouting Ireland. Fintan Strain is Warden. Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Ladybirds, Brownies, Girl Guides, Senior Branch, Guides, Rangers and their Leaders from far and near have all enjoyed this natural haven in the heart of County Waterford, Ireland.
Glenshelane is a one-acre (0.5 hectare) Campsite given on lease by the Forestry Department (now Coillte) to Scouting in 1969.
The Campsite, set in a grassy clearing in the heart of a forest, has one large main camping area along with a smaller camping area on the other side of the Poplar tree lined avenue in this beautiful wooded glen. It is surrounded on all sides by Coillte managed coniferous forest beside the Monavugga River, which runs on the Eastern side of the site.
The Glenshelane Scout Campsite and Cabin was first developed in 1971 and has two flush toilets, water supply, a campfire circle, and four concrete fire slab units with iron fire stands. Situated on flat ground in a steep sided valley the campsite is very well sheltered and protected from the elements.
The Green Caravan on Glenshelane Scout Campsite and Cabin was built in the early 1900's and was originally used by 'road gangs' of Waterford County Council for their base and accommodation before being donated to the 4th Waterford Scout Group. A second Caravan has since been added to the site near to the river.
There is also an Altar Area on the riverside of the Avenue in Glenshelane Scout Campsite & Cabin, which can be used for a variety of religious services, investitures, Scouts own, badge presentations, special events etc. In the woods beside the Main Camping Area there is an outdoor water tap.
Beside the main camping area is a large log cabin and shower area erected in 2005. The cabin has a front drying area along with indoor toilet facilities and three shower units. There is a kitchen area, with cooker, sink, microwave, fridge, electric kettle, toaster and storage facilities. The cabin is available for hire all year round. The electricity is run on a meter card basis and these cards can be purchased from the Warden on arrival at check-in or during your stay if more are needed.
Information about the rules of the campsite and booking fees / deposits can be found on this web site. For further details contact either of the two Wardens Fintan Strain or Brian Mulvihill.
